Dakota is a given name derived from the name of two states in the United States: North Dakota or South Dakota, or from the name of an indigenous Native American tribe. The name is translated to mean "friend", "friendly" or "allies" in the Yankton-Yanktonai and Santee dialects of the Lakota Sioux language.

Dakota is in use for both girls and boys. It was the 203rd most popular name for American boys in 2007, having ranked in the top 100 most popular names from 1995 to 2000. It first appeared among the top 1,000 most popular names for boys in the United States in 1985. It was the 239th most popular name for American girls in 2007. It has ranked among the top 400 names for American girls since 1991. The name has been in occasional use for both sexes in the United States since at least the 1940s.

Dakota people

The Dakota people are a Native American tribe and First Nations band government in North America. They compose two of the three main subcultures of the Sioux /ˈsuː/ people, and are typically divided into the Eastern Dakota and the Western Dakota.

The Eastern Dakota are the Santee (Isáŋyathi or Isáŋ-athi; "knife" + "encampment"), who reside in the eastern Dakotas, central Minnesota and northern Iowa. The Western Dakota are the Yankton, and the Yanktonai (Iháŋktȟuŋwaŋ and Iháŋktȟuŋwaŋna; "Village-at-the-end" and "Little village-at-the-end"), who reside in the Missouri River area. The Yankton-Yanktonai are collectively also referred to by the endonym Wičhíyena, and have in the past been erroneously classified as Nakota.

Name

The word Dakota means "ally" in the Dakota language, and their autonyms include Ikčé Wičhášta ("Indian people") and Dakhóta Oyáte ("Dakota people").

Ethnic groups

The Dakota are one of the three major linguistic groups of Siouan-speaking people (the others being the Lakota (Thítȟuŋwaŋ or Teton) and Nakota (Assiniboine), and one of the two major ethnic groups still speaking a relatively mutually-intelligible common language - D/Lakota. The Dakota include the following bands: Santee (Isanti), including the Bdewákaŋthuŋwaŋ (Mdewakanton), Waȟpéthuŋwaŋ (Wahpeton), Waȟpékhute (Wahpekute), Sisíthuŋwaŋ (Sisseton), and the Iháŋkthuŋwaŋ (Yankton), and Iháŋkthuŋwaŋna (Yanktonai).

Dakota (cigarette)

Dakota was a brand of cigarettes introduced by R.J. Reynolds Tobacco (RJR) in 1990. Their marketing was targeted towards young blue-collar "virile females", in an attempt to displace the Marlboro brand without diluting Reynolds' dominant Camel brand's appeal to males. After test-marketing in Houston, Tucson, Phoenix, and Nashville didn't yield the desired results, the brand was withdrawn.

Prior to the marketing campaign, its details were leaked to the Washington Post. In spite of the manufacturer's denial to have specifically targeted young females, this revelation sparked widespread discussion of targeted advertising in general in the media.

Design (UK band)

Design was a British vocal group of the early 1970s and its members were Barry Alexander, Gabrielle Field, Kathy Manuell, Jeff Matthews, John Mulcahy-Morgan and Geoff Ramseyer. Their musical style has been described as folk rock 'with intricate and appealing harmonies and an interesting psychedelic twist' and 'sunshine harmony pop with a light hippy vibe' and is now called sunshine pop. Design released 13 singles and 5 albums in the UK and appeared on more than 50 television shows before they split up in 1976.

Barry Alexander, Jeff Matthews and Geoff Ramseyer all played guitar in addition to singing, while Barry also played keyboards. Gabrielle Field occasionally played tenor recorder.

History

Design was formed as a six-piece vocal group by singer and songwriter Tony Smith while he was working at the BBC in London in December 1968. The group signed a recording contract with Adrian Kerridge at Lansdowne Studios and recorded their first album Design during 1969. This led to a two-album deal with Epic Records in the USA.

Rugby league positions

A rugby league football team consists of thirteen players on the field, with four substitutes on the bench. Players are divided into two general categories, forwards and backs.

Forwards are generally chosen for their size and strength. They are expected to run with the ball, to attack, and to make tackles. The center (C), also known as the five or the big man, is one of the five positions in a regulation basketball game. The center is normally the tallest player on the team, and often has a great deal of strength and body mass as well.

The tallest player to ever be drafted in the NBA or the WNBA was the 7'8" (2.33 m) Yasutaka Okayama from Japan, though he never played in the NBA. The tallest players to ever play in the NBA, at 7'7" (2.31 m), are centers Gheorghe Mureșan, and Manute Bol. Standing at 7'2" (2.18 m), Margo Dydek is the tallest player to have ever played in the WNBA.

Emergence of the center and the era of George Mikan

The center is considered a necessary component for a successful team, especially in professional leagues such as the NBA. Great centers have been the foundation for most of the dynasties in both the NBA and NCAA. The 6’10" (2.08 m) George Mikan pioneered the Center position, shattering the widely held perception that tall players could not develop the agility and coordination to play basketball well, and ushering in the role of the dominant big man. He led DePaul University to the NIT title, then, after turning professional, won seven National Basketball League, Basketball Association of America and NBA Championships in his ten-year career (1946–56), nine of them with the Minneapolis Lakers. Using his height to dominate opposing players, Mikan invented the hook shot and the shot block; as a consequence, the NCAA, and later NBA, adopted the goaltending rule, and, in 1951, the NBA widened the foul lane, a decision known as the 'Mikan rule'.
